At times, Haru can come off as cold or uncaring. Never the kind to be overly talkative, Haru isn't socially engaging and actively dismisses people he doesn't want to handle or things he doesn't want to do. We do see small breaks in his shell around his friends during more extreme situations, proving he isn't as uncaring as he originally seems to be.

For Haru, swimming is freedom, and this is reflected by his choice of style: free. He baths in swimsuits and is quick to remove his clothing and jump into any water that he deems deep enough. Often, this can become a problem as he doesn't even hold himself back in stores.

Among his friends, Makoto and Rin stand out the most. Makoto is his childhood friend, and in some ways, his other half. Often able to guess what Haru is thinking, Makoto is quick to mother him, leading to a dependent relationship until Haru realizes he was taking Makoto for granted. Rin, in opposition, challenges him and makes him feel more than he usually likes. Rin is the reason Haru quit swimming in middle school, and now, swimming with Rin is what drives him to improve.

However, Haru isn't helpless or spoiled. Living separate from his parents, Haru is able to, and even enjoys, cleaning the home and cooking. He excels in arts and crafts, and when he sets his mind to something or is committed -- willingly or not -- he can be dependable. In middle school, he was volunteered for projects he didn't want to do and yet he does them to the best of his ability.

Sadly, Haru isn't the most logical among them. This isn't just reflected in the chart provided by the creators, but in the show as well. A good example would be when Rin and Haru go to Australia. When a man speaks to Haru in English, Haru's plan is to look at him in silence, as if he's hoping to communicate with his mind instead. In the same episode, when Rin loses him for a few seconds, Haru panics. Likewise, he puts off making decisions about college because of fear of change, and it eventually nearly breaks him.

We see him grow throughout the series. At the end, and in Dive to the Future, Haru is more willing to admit the importance to his friendship. He's also ready to move on, to break outside of his bubble and deal with the bigger world. He isn't the life of the party, but he isn't so distant either.
